You've gotten good answers above, and I don't know the ins and outs of just hooking up a "generic" (non ipod) MP3 player (ie, do you "need" software to manage the library and uploads, etc.), but if you get a "real" ipod, then when you connect it and DL itunes, you can select "manage manually" and do everything VERY easily without any more purchases from them, etc. The itunes library function/software is user friendly and lets you build up your DEAD collection as MP3 very nicely without ANY thing more than a five year old has...except for a girlfriend. ON that front, hands off Miss PM, ie, Miss D...she's already committed to me and the prom, with Rob as limo driver, though word on the street is his wheels are a used 67 VW squareback.

I have a bicycle built for two - Miss D(aisy) can give me her answer while you trot along behind.

Hmm, Rob as a running out of steam Hal. Oddly, it works for me.

[er...at least I think so...crap...can't recall if that's the tune he sings at the end!?]

Well Wordsmithy of the Highest Order, here we all are--back in the highlife again (round this ol' Forum). Good friends indeed! [uh-oh--did you catch that cosmic charlie singled ME out for over-use of the "!" in his most amusing kum-bye-ah? Damn...guess folks are keeping track!]

Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. Here's to the highlife!

Q1: do I have to sign up/pay for 'itunes' membership/ plus the cost of the music?

A1: Sign up - yes, Pay - no, for membership, yes to pay for whatever you download. If you get an iPod, you may be asked to register it with iTunes. I would because it will automatically scan for needed updates when you connect to load music. As an aside, I would recommend moving/copying the downloaded files to a file location different than the iTunes folder on your hard drive just in case iTunes gets all hinky on you.

Q2: can i download gd auds with little hassle/

A2: Yes

Q3: my budget is $100 any reccomendations on a player/

A3: ipod Nano - you can get the 2Gb on EBay for under $100, for about $120 you can get an 8 Gb Nano

Q4: if there was a previuos thread, forgive me

A4: There was, you are. Don't sweat it, most of us can't even remember what we had for breakfast much less a thread subject that popped up a few days ago.

Q5: thanks

A6: You're welcome.

Q6: ps. i've gotten too lazy for the 'shift' key

A6: Awww, I'm not even gonna type an answer.

Geez, Mando, sometimes you just hit the spot. I really appreciated that even if the recipient doesn't. I'm cackling like an old hen here. I'll send you an egg by way of thanks...

Well Solo did ask to have explained like he was a six year old.

May I get credited for a smart-ass reply even if it wasn't my intent? I would like to have an account to draw from in the event I experience momentary weakness and decide to respond to a troll.

Your credit is in excellent standing around here. And we're ready to go to Defcon 1 any time you want to launch a troll assault.

With a $100 budget, I think it would be hard to beat a Sansa Fuze. The 8G model goes for $60-80, and you can add an 8G memory card for another $20 or so. Now you have enough space for 50 or 60 shows (maybe 30 or 40 if you go heavy on '72-'74).

It sounds great - even when plugged into a stereo. It's small but not too small (my wife and kid have each sacrificed a Sansa Clip to the laundry gods). It's tough enough to survive a year of CONSTANT use and abuse by my 13yo. You can load it by dragging and dropping files and folders pretty much like an ordinary external drive - no software or itunes needed (but you can do it that way if you want). My only complaint is it doesn't do gapless playback.

I'd go with the 4Gb Sansa clip model:

http://www.amazon.com/Clip-Plus-MP3-Player-Black/dp/B002MAPT7U/ref=pd_cp_e_3

Good sound quality, battery life, and small. Goes for $40. You can even swap out memory cards. I have the 2Gb model and am satisfied.

The only catch with this player is it can't play files purchased from Itunes. If you have a huge library purchased from Itunes you may be better off with the Ipod.

Any music files you have downloaded on to your computer can easily be transferred to your mp3 player. You only have to pay for music obtained from a commercially run site like iTunes. There are many 'free' alternatives but you must let your conscience be your guide in your use of these sites. GD auds from this site are absolutely free of charge (as is a lot of very fine live music from other bands) - so fill yerself up.
